7 Common VocalLab AI Mistakes (And How to Fix Them)

What I did: Generated my first voiceover at default speed. It sounded like I was being rushed through a fire drill.
The fix: Default pacing is optimized for demo purposes, not actual content. Drop it to 0.9x for educational/tutorial content. Bump it to 1.1x for energetic social media clips. Test one adjustment at a time.
Mistake 2: Skipping Emotion Tags
What I did: Typed a script, clicked generate, got a flat robotic reading. Thought “this sounds terrible, what did I pay for?”
The fix: Add `(conversational)` or `(warm)` at the beginning of every script. It takes two seconds and transforms the output from “Siri reading instructions” to “real person talking.” The difference is night and day.
Mistake 3: Writing Long Sentences
What I did: Wrote naturally — long compound sentences with multiple clauses, just like you’d write an article.
The fix: AI voices need shorter, cleaner sentences than humans do. Break every sentence over 20 words into two. Add punctuation. Write like you’re writing a script for someone to read, not an essay. The AI follows punctuation marks for breathing and pacing.
Mistake 4: Bad Source Audio for Voice Cloning
What I did: Recorded a voice cloning sample on my laptop mic with the AC running in the background. The clone came out sounding like I was underwater.
The fix: Use your best microphone. Record in a quiet room. Keep the sample 30-60 seconds. Speak naturally — conversational, not announcer voice. The cleaner the input, the better the clone.
Mistake 5: Not Previewing Before Export
What I did: Generated, exported, imported into my video editor, started editing… and realized the voice was too fast, the emphasis was wrong, and there was a mispronunciation. Had to redo the whole thing.
The fix: Always press Preview first. Listen to at least 30 seconds of output before exporting. Catch issues early. It takes 20 seconds and saves 20 minutes.
Mistake 6: Forgetting Caption Export
What I did: Exported MP3, closed VocalLab, started editing… realized I needed captions. Had to go back, re-export with SRT, re-import. Wasted 10 minutes.
The fix: Check “Export SRT captions” by default. Even if you don’t think you need them today, having them saves time when you change your mind. The SRT files are small and cost nothing to generate alongside your audio.
Mistake 7: Choosing the Wrong Tier
What I did: Bought Tier 1 ($49) thinking “I’ll test it cheap.” Hit the 10K character limit on day three. Hit the 50-minute limit by week two. Had to upgrade.

If you’ve tried everything and the voice still sounds robotic:
1. Make sure you’re using a voice marked as “Studio” or “Premium” quality (not “Standard”)
2. Add `(breath)` between major sections — it forces natural pauses
3. Check your script for words the AI might not know (proper nouns, jargon)
4. Try a completely different voice — sometimes the problem is the voice match, not the tool

1. Don’t optimize voice selection. Pick one that’s 80% right. You’ll discover better ones later.
2. Write for the AI, not for a human reader. Shorter sentences, clearer punctuation, more line breaks.
3. Emotion tags aren’t optional. They’re the difference between “this sounds like AI” and “wait, is that a real person?”
4. Batch your work. Write 5 scripts at once. Generate all voiceovers. Export all files. Edit later.
5. Use the preview. Every time. I caught three issues in my second week that would have required full re-exports.
