VocalLab AI Voice Design — Creating the Perfect Voice Without a Mic
Here’s a problem I didn’t know I had until VocalLab solved it: I wanted a voice that didn’t exist yet.
Not a clone of someone. Not one of the 260 pre-built options. I wanted “female, early 30s, neutral American accent, warm but authoritative, with a slight upward inflection at the end of questions.” Nobody had recorded that voice. But I could describe it.
Voice Design is the feature I thought would be a gimmick. It turned out to be my favorite part of the tool.
How Voice Design Works
You type a natural-language description of the voice you want. Something like:
“Male, late 40s, British, deep voice, professional but friendly, like a BBC documentary narrator having a coffee chat.”
The AI generates a voice matching that description in about 30 seconds. You can then tweak and regenerate until it’s right.
What Gets It Right
The accent accuracy surprised me. I tested “Australian, young, casual” and got a voice that actually sounded like a young Australian — not an American doing an Australian impression. Same for “Indian, mid-30s, professional” — it sounded authentic, not caricatured.
The emotional tone mapping works better than I expected. “Warm” actually sounds warm. “Authoritative” doesn’t just mean louder — it changes pacing and emphasis.
What Doesn’t Work As Well
The descriptions have to be relatively simple. If your prompt is more than ~15 words, the AI starts averaging out the conflicting signals. “Deep but also light, professional but also casual, British but not too British” — you’ll get a confused voice.
You also can’t regenerate a specific aspect. If the accent is perfect but the tone is wrong, you’re regenerating everything, not just adjusting one variable.
Practical Use Cases
- Brand voice creation — design a voice that matches your brand guidelines exactly
- Client projects — describe what the client wants instead of auditioning 50 pre-built voices
- Character voices — game developers and animators will love this for quick prototypes
- Multilingual content — design voices per language with appropriate accents and tones
Voice Design vs Voice Cloning — When to Use Which

Your personal brand ❌ ✅
Neutral narrator ✅ ❌
Character voice ✅ ❌
Client wants specific sound ✅ Maybe
Quick prototype ✅ ✅
The simplest rule: if you’re speaking as yourself, clone your voice. If you’re speaking as a brand or character, design a voice.
Compared to Competitors
ElevenLabs has Voice Lab but it requires professional plan ($99/mo). Descript doesn’t offer this at all. Speechelo’s voice customization is basic sliders, not description-based.
For $139 (Tier 2), you get 5 saved voice designs — that’s a lot of value for a feature most tools charge monthly for. At Tier 3, you get 20 saved designs, which is more than any individual creator would need.
Practical Workflow Idea
Design 3 voices for your content:
1. Narrator — neutral, professional, for main content
2. Friendly — warm, conversational, for intros and outros
3. Authority — deep, serious, for important announcements or CTAs
Switch between them based on the section’s purpose. Your audience won’t notice the difference consciously, but the variety keeps them engaged.
