You bought an automation tool. Great. Now what?

This one is a step up in complexity, which is why it’s #4 not #1. You’re automating a real workflow now. Go slow: automate one row first, verify, then add the loop. Getting the loop wrong on day one is how people rage-quit automation.

Task 5: Scheduled reporting

The endgame of the beginner set: a bot that runs on a schedule, gathers data, formats it, and sends it.

The flow: trigger on a schedule → gather data from your sources → build the summary → email it to the right people.

This is the bot that makes you look like a wizard. It runs before you’re awake and delivers the thing people used to wait for. And it’s the natural graduation from the earlier tasks — you’re combining everything you learned.

The three mistakes that kill beginner automation

Skipping the test step. Run your bot manually step-by-step before letting it loose. Verify every step. Automation amplifies errors — a bot doing the wrong thing 50 times is worse than no bot.

Not handling the edge cases. What happens when the email is empty? When the form field is missing? Your bot needs a “what if” branch. Bots break on surprises, not on the happy path.

Giving up on task one. Your first bot will be rough. That’s normal. Finish it anyway — the second one takes half the time, and the third one is actually fun.

The honest note on maintenance

Bots need love. When an app updates its layout, your bot notices. Budget a little maintenance time, and don’t build bots so fragile that a single change breaks them. The simpler the bot, the more robust it is.
